CONTENT
The octagonal granite Norman font at Lewannick Church, near Launceston in Cornwall, UK is a geometrical tour de force with complex geometrical carvings on all eight faces. The article analyses each face in turn, tracing the geometrical route from setting out to cutting in the punishing medium of granite and, considering the medium, the carving attains a remarkable level of finesse. The geometries range from simple compass geometry daisy wheels to pentagram stars, spirals and mazes, in all an encyclopaedic repertoire yet simultaneously calm and dignified as befits an ecclesiastical environment.
